Make 2018 Goals, Not Resolutions

Happy New Year!

We’re only twelve days into 2018 and already some people talking about how time seems to be flying – it’s not by the way. Time flying is often what we feel when we aren’t paying attention to the moments… but that’s a talk for another day. Even though we’re only just coming up on the two-week mark, some people have also started to fizzle out on that fire they had on January 1st and worse, have already stopped thinking about those fresh dreams and goals that they had when “The Ball” dropped.

THE GLASS IS MORE THAN HALF FULL

But, it HAS only been twelve days! We’re just getting started! We’re not even halfway through Q1, or even month one for that matter, so the proverbial glass is waaay more than half full!

I think the problem lies in the fact that for some people, they’re not being strategic. They’re just moving through the days without a plan and without direction. The holiday decorations have been taken down and the New Years fireworks are all done. Now it’s time to work. And work is, well… WORK! It means getting comfortable with being uncomfortable while moving towards that new thing/situation as well as developing the mindset that will change and enhance lives. If it were easy, everyone would be doing it. Yet, how many people are actually living the way they say they want and doing the things they say they want to do?

So, what about you? Are you still fired up for 2018? Have you taken the time to develop a clear plan for the year? No, there’s no crystal ball, of course, so you can’t know exactly what will happen in the next eleven and a half-ish months, but you certainly can create intention and take action to move in a very definite direction this year.

INTENTION IS POWERFUL

If you haven’t really taken the time to develop a plan to make this year amazing, there’s still plenty, PLENTY of time to do so.

Here’s how.

Get yourself a journal or notebook along with a calendar. Keeping your thoughts in your head, well, that’s just crazy talk when you’re already so busy and have so much going on. It’s also been shown to be the best way NOT to accomplish your goals, as evidenced by all those things you’ve been meaning to do, but still haven’t. Instead write your thoughts down so you can see them and take action. Look at them at least once a week (if not more!) so that they stay fresh and you stay pointed in the right direction.

The calendar? Well, seeing the months laid out helps to make the year more tangible so you can see the days and time as the irreplaceable commodity that they are. Let’s make this the year that you’re not waking up to find that it’s “already summertime” or worse yet, Christmas!

REFLECTION ON 2017

So, how did you do in 2017? Here are some things to think about as you close out last year and prep for fresh hopes and new opportunities.

  1. Did you accomplish ALL of your 2017 goals? If not, why? What’s left undone? Are those goals still important?
  2. What worked?
  3. What didn’t work?
  4. What were your best highlights for the year?
  5. What were your greatest challenges? Did you overcome them? How?
  6. What did you learn last year?

Here are some areas to consider and review as you ponder these questions.

1.  Self-care

2.  Fitness

3.  Personal Development

4.  Spiritual

5.  Friendships

6.  Family

7.  Marriage

8.  Travel

9.  Work/Business/Career

10.  Finances

Now that you’ve reviewed these areas, what do you want now? Think about what you want to have done and accomplished by this coming December 31, 2018. Consider the same areas above. Think about creating the habits you need for success (like eating 2-3 cups of vegetables every day) instead of zeroing in on restrictive New Year’s Resolutions (like “I’m never eating sugar again”), for instance. Be sure to write out what you need to do to succeed, including getting help with your goals as necessary. Change is not easy so save time, effort and even money by getting help in the areas you need it.

HERE’S TO A FRESH MINDSET

I hope this helps you to get focused for the New Year and to get on track for achieving amazing things in 2018.

I wish you all the best and look forward to helping you make this year GREAT!
